What does their work involve?

They invest expertise, resources and both government and Lottery money into community sport.
£480 million is invested directly through 46 national governing bodies of sport. And there are five open funding streams other organisations can apply to.

They have a statutory role in protecting playing fields and must be consulted if community playing fields are threatened by potential developments.
We provide a wealth of expertise and advice on range of sports subjects including planning, facilities, coaching, volunteering and sports development.
And we act as advocates for community sport - bringing together a wide range of partners from local and national government, the commercial sector, higher and further education and the third sector to make the most of their investment in sport.

How will they acheive these goals?
They will achieve these targets by working with:
  • sporting landscape partners - Youth Sport Trust and UK Sport
  • National governing bodies of sport
  • National partners
  • Local authorities
  • County sports partnerships
  • Higher and further education
  • The third sector
  • The commercial sector
  • London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Delivery Authority

DCMS- School Sports

"Sport is a vital part of a healthy childhood, it helps in the drive against child obesity and competitive school sport offers a wide range of benefits like better self esteem, confidence and social skills. That is why we have got behind the School Games by providing up to £20 million of funding over the next two years. It will help foster strong links between schools and encourage greater uptake." Health Secretary Andrew Lansley

A School Games Tournament – inspired by the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics – is going to be set up to give every child the opportunity take part and compete.
  • 500 schools across nine regions will pilot an annual School Games Day: a ’finals’ day stemming from a programme of intra-school competition which will offer disabled children as many opportunities as non-disabled children
  • a rolling programme of leagues and tournaments will promote more competition between schools at a town or district level
  • up to 60 new, county or city-level ‘Festivals of Sport’ will showcase the best of local competitive sport in the inter-school finals
  • the most talented young athletes will have the chance to represent their schools in a high-profile, national event

AO1 DCMS- School Sport

AO1 DCMS places, people, play

Partnership
Places People Play will be delivered by Sport England which will be in partnership with the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the British Paralympic Association (BPA). Sport England will also have the backing of The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
Funding
There has been a £135 million budget made possible by the Government’s National Lottery reforms, which will be bringing additional funding into grassroots sport. This will hopefully increase the amount of children playing grass root sports and will increase the quality of the facilities and the coaches teaching the sports.
Sport England will also be consulting disabled people and those who support them on how Sport England can find some additional investment, at least £8 million, on tackling the barriers they face when they want to play sport, as well as making sure that every element of this programme works for disabled sportsmen and women too. This will encourage disabled people and women to play more sport and will also help the sporting industry to discover what is stopping people from participating in sports and help them develop ways to get them involved
Detailed Sections
Places
The places where people play sport will be transformed, which will make the benefits of London 2012 visible in cities, towns and villages across the country by:
·         Upgrading up to a thousand local sports clubs and facilities
·         Investing in a number of iconic multi-sport facilities that set the standards for future facilities development
·         Protecting and improving hundreds of playing fields across the country, preserving high-quality spaces for local people to play and enjoy sport.
People
They aim to inspire people to make sport happen at the local level, embedding the Olympic and Paralympic values in grassroots sport, by:
·         Recruiting, training and deploying 40,000 Sport Makers as the next generation of sports volunteers to organise and lead grassroots sporting activities.

Play
They will create the sporting opportunities and challenges that give everyone the chance to become part of the mass participation legacy, through:
·         Gold Challenge – an independent initiative that will motivate over 100,000 adults to test themselves in multiple Olympic and Paralympic sports, and in doing so raise millions of pounds for charity
·         Sportivate – a nationwide campaign that will capture the excitement of sport, providing opportunities for teenagers and young adults to receive six weeks of coaching in the sport of their choice and guiding them into regular participation within their community.
